Program Overview
The Rural Minority Health Scholars Program is a five-week summer program for current high school seniors who plan to enter college in the next academic year. The students live on The University of Alabama campus and take a general chemistry course; attend tutorials, seminars and field trips to rural medical facilities; and shadow African-American physicians from their hometowns. The objective of this program is to increase the number of minority students from rural Alabama who qualify for admission to medical school through the Rural Medical Scholars Program.

- Academics
Participants will enroll in introductory science course with a lab. Students will also attend special seminars related to health care, study sessions, and take part in field trips to a major medical center and local rural health care facilities.
- Cost
Tuition, books, housing and a meal card are provided by financial support from the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board. Participants will be responsible for their transportation to and from the program and personal expenses.
- Dates- May 28 — June 28, 2017
- Housing
Participants will reside on campus. Males and females will be housed separately in a residence hall with gender specific counselors assigned to each group. For the students’ safety and security, a sign-in/sign-out system will be used. Curfew and quiet hours for study time are established and enforced.
- Leisure/Social Opportunities
Daily recreation opportunities are available, as well as regularly scheduled group social activities. All group activities and social events are required. Students will be allowed to use the student recreation center and other recreational facilities around campus.
